Paul
Followup on our meeting at Caffe Trieste last night. Looking at Pauli's 1921 article bearing in mind its early date.
Note prerequisites:
11. On forming tensor densities by multiplying ordinary tensors by (detguv)^1/2 = ?g
19. On Gauss & Stokes theorems in curved space-time.
20. eq (150b) for covariant 4-divergence of a second rank tensor density.
21. "free vectors" for "linear affine" subset of the nonlinear Diff(4) local symmetry group of gravity breaking global translational symmetry.
The ordinary 4-divergence of the affine tensor densities vanish corresponding to a limited kind of local current conservation for the linear subset of the full Diff(4) group, e.g. eq. (153) for a second rank affine tensor density.
One can then get a quasi-invariant "charge" and space integral affine "4-vector" in this linearized limit e.g. (156) for Ju.
But then the miracle happens:
Jv retains "this vector character also if we go from K to an arbitrary coordinate system K' which coincides with K outside the world canal .... the Jv are quite independent of the choice of coordinate system inside the world canal. It is interesting that starting with an affine tensor Uv^u which behaves covariantly only under linear coordinate transformations, one should obtain by integration a set of quantities Jv which behave as a vector under a much more general transformation group. The vector Jv is distinguished from ordinary vectors by not being related to a given point. We shall follow Klein in calling it a 'free vector' [non-localized vector]"
Note (156) is the space integral of the tensor density (I am using math fonts that may not appear in Windows e-mail programs properly. It's a new Adobe standard now coming into play - GO MAC!
Jv = ?Uv^4?gd^3x
So far this is close to Ch 20 of MTW.
Then go to 61 "The energy of the gravitational field"
Take the matter (source for bending) tensor density Tuv(Matter) ?g
The Diff(4) covariant 4 divergence of the "wood" matter stress-energy density tensor density can be written from (150b) as
Div^u[Tuv(Matter)?g] = ?[Tuv(Matter)?g]/?x^u + [Trs(Matter)?g]?v^r^s
This vanishes in non-exotic vacuum when the Bianchi identities hold for the geometry "marble".
See (341a) for a slight variation on what I just wrote.
Then back to 57 eqs. (405) & (406)
to get a "flat" conservation equation with ordinary partial derivatives and with a local affine linear vacuum stress-energy density tensor density of the pure marble gravity field. One has to go back to 23 - we are back to the affine tensor densities
for the linear subset of Diff(4).
That is (406) is
? [Tuv(Matter)?g]/?x^u + ? [tuv(Geometry)?g]/?x^u = 0
With NONLOCAL "free vector" conserved
Jv = ? [Tuv(Matter)?g + tuv(Geometry)?g]d^3x = constant (447)
for a closed system where this tuv(Geometry) is a linear affine quasi-tensor not a full Diff(4) tensor.
How did Pauli explain this physically?
Einstein "proved that ... (447) for the total energy and momentum of a closed system are to a large extent, independent of the coordinate system, although the localization of the energy will in general be completely different for different coordinate systems ... ONE CANNOT ASSIGN ANY PHYSICAL MEANING TO THE tuv(Geometry)?g THEMSELVES, i.e. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO CARRY OUT A LOCALIZATION OF ENERGY AND MOMENTUM IN A GENERALLY COVARIANT AND PHYSICALLY SATISFACTORY WAY. BUT THE INTEGRAL EXPRESSIONS HAVE A DEFINITE PHYSICAL MEANING." p. 177 Dover paperback "Theory of Relativity" W. Pauli CAPS not in original.
This is 1921 and obviously Pauli back then agrees with MTW 1973!
Pauli then discusses ASYMPTOTICALLY FLAT SPACE-TIME as the natural arena for the above in context of far field gravity waves. He also can do a similar thing for spatially closed universes in 62.
Note that Pauli mentions my rediscovered idea that
tuv(Geometry) = (String Tension)Guv(Einstein) on p. 177
so that, as a Diff(4) local tensor equation
Tuv(Matter) + tuv(Geometry) = 0 LOCALLY
in non-exotic vacuum.
This way of looking at Einstein's local field equations was apparently
first suggested by Lorentz and Levi-Civita as early as 1917!
Einstein did not like it because "the gravitational energy of a closed system
would always be zero, and that the maintenance of this value of the energy
does not require the continued existence of the system in some form or other."
However, I do not find Einstein's objection here at all convincing - for
reasons of metric engineering. Einstein's theory is the degenerate
limit of a bigger theory depending on Planck's h that allows metric
engineering. Einstein's theory only uses the parameters G and c.
Since he has h = 0 (no quantum theory) in 1918 he did not
realize that the stability of matter is an effect of h. What Einstein
says above is correct only in the limit h = 0. He could not know
this in 1918 nor could the 21 year old Pauli have known it in
1921 when the above was all written. It would be another 4 years
before Heisenberg et-al.
Also remember Paul I mentioned last night that the fundamental
clash here is that total energy-momentum are only conserved
for a globally flat translational group symmetry (Noether's theorem)
and that Einstein's gravity as curvature is the breaking of the
global translational symmetry i.e. locally gauging the translational
group with the metric huv = guv - Minkowskiuv as the compensating
local gauge tensor field, i.e. strain tensor of the world crystal distortion fields
d^u(x) = Lp^2 ?(Goldstone Coherent Phase)/?x^u

Notes from 1993
I received a phone call from a man named George Koopman
during one of our Esalen seminars in 1976. He asked if he
could come to Big Sur. I said yes. Koopman soon became a
financial patron of my Ghost Busters at Esalen.
That took me to http://www.stardrive.org/Jack/history.html
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
NOTE:
The reasons for searching "George Koopman" was two-pronged : There
were two elements [1] Esalen [2] Big Sur. Both Esalen and Big Sur
are found in and consistant to the book "The Man Who Took Trips."
Paul Lerning told the author of the book Roy Ald to send "the check
$$" to either New Mexico or Big Sur. Lerning wasn't sure which as he
didn't know for sure where he'd be. Lerning told Roy Ald he just
wanted to "get away from it all."
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
That took me to http://www.stardrive.org/Jack/history.html
: [Jack]
David Padwa had lived in Santa Fe New Mexico - and - Gregory Corso,
knew Pawda in Greenwich Village.
I have as much claim to reincarnation to Rashi as the Dali Lama has
to reincarnation or as any Shaman has for that matter. That may be no
claim at all, of course, since the only way reincarnation can be true
is if my version of post-quantum physics with signal-nonlocality is
true. That's the interesting new idea here.
That Rashi de Troyes was known as "Zarfati" ("The Frenchman") is well
known. I first found out about this from David Padwa, my distant
cousin, in 1980. David is in "Be Here Now" by Ram Dass. He is the
rich American with the Land Rover. He also allegedly brought the Dalai
Lama to America for the CIA according to Beat Poet, Gregory Corso,
who knew him in Greenwich Village.
Padwa corrected that a few years ago. He said it was not the Dali Lama but some other
Tulkus.
The well known surrealist scholar,
Phillip LaMantia from Lawrence Ferlinghetti's book store City Lights
in San Francisco's North Beach, led me to the book in which it is
written:
"he was called R. Solomon by the Jews of France, and R. Salomon ha-
Zarfati(the Frenchman) by Jews outside of France (p.33)... According
to a rather wide-spread legend, Rashi stood in intimate relations
with one of the principal chiefs of the Crusade... Godfrey of
Bouillon (p.68)"
La Mantia is currently in seclusion depressed over Stephen Schwartz's article about him in a Catholic Magazine.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
t.c.s.a.
Then at 01:09:30a.m. I looked for any instances of David Padwa in
Destiny Matrix, yes he was listed. I'd already read that part on 09-
18-2003 but I didn't have "The Man Who Took Trips" by Roy Ald at the
time so Padwa didn't figure into my Worldline at that point.
"Destiny Matrix" says : page 64 Gregory "Corso" knew David Padwa
from "the Village" [ thats where Paul Lerning was from. Actually the
book says Lerning was from the East Village which I think is the
same just the eastern part of Greenwich Village?]
Then Gregory Corso goes on to say that Padwa made a lot of money from
XEROX.
As of yet I have not discovered any connection between Lerning and
Xerox but, when I read that Pawda went to India with Ram Dass, that
its mentioned in "BE HERE NOW" that rang a bell.
The idea intrinsic to the book i.e."being here now" in the present,
resonates with the Paul Lerning Roy Ald interpretation extracted from
the ilbithian alien's "Formula Of Formulas, that the present
precedes the past." That same idea is conveyed in both. The theme
being in the present is expressed in both : The Formula of Formulas
and "Be Here Now." [ time now is 12-06-03 01:40a.m.]
Simply put its the eternal Solipsist as in being here now. Right now.
Also IF David Padwa IS NOT "The Man Who Took Trips" the fact that
Pawda and Paul Lerning are from the Village lends credence to the the
idea that they are one and the same person. That being said, since
both Lerning and Padwa were from the VILLAGE, that tells me that this
idea of Being Here Now may have had its origins from the VILLAGE and
was communicated via osmosis through the underground Cafes etc. If
Pawda was not Lerning then Pawda may have picked it up by way of
osmosis with its source coming from Lernings tale of boarding Flying
Saucers when tripping on LSD. Later Lerning would experience 5 OOBE
experience's. Lerning lay dying only to live again 5 times! This all
while at the hospitol. The formula of formulas with its "present
precedes the past" freeing humans being time locked in a paradigm
where the arrow of time is past, present future and coupled to the
5th dimensional theme is reminiscent of todays string theories. These
revelations came through to Lerning while at the hospitol where he
was having his OOBES. The ilbithian Alien mathematical equations did
NOT come thru during his previous LSD "dematerializations" which is
reminisicent to Ray Stanford's automobile ride while driving to see
Uri Geller. .
This takes us back to Jack Sarfatti. Perhaps it was David Padwa and /
or whoever Paul Lerning really was that made Jack's "Telephone call
from the future on board an A.I. Spacecraft from the future"?
This idea would hinge on Paul Lerning and or David Pawda
being "within" a certain age limit. I'm guessing Jack Sarfatti and
David Pawda are about the same age?
No, I am pretty sure Padwa is older than me by maybe 10 years.
For example If Padwa was 6 years
younger than Jack, making Padwa 7 years old in 1953 he would have
been too young to have called Jack? Maybe maybe not. Six year old
kids can make telephone calls. I highly doubt that, heck make him 3
years old. I already know that Paul Lerning is very close to the same
age as Jack. Lerning was in his early 30s in around say 1968 - 71.
How old is David Pawda? But whether Lerning / Pawda KNEW Jack in
1953, OR KNEW OF HIM in 1953, he whoever he really was could have
called Jack from anywhere a telephone made itself available. Jack has
already said that Padwa is a distant relative.
When two people know each other theres a higher probablity, more of
chance for there being some kind of motive than not. The association
makes it more probable than not, since they would have known each
other.
[03:14a.m. 12-06-03]
So I now have some reason to think that David Padwa maybe Paul
Lerning "The Man Who Took Trips." author Roy Ald. 1971.
Why? The Timing is right 1967 :

q=cache:m0E3NZIvreQJ:www.sanatansociety.com/artists_authors/aa_harish_
johari_history.htm+%22David+Padwa%22+Village&hl=en&ie=UTF-8
IN 1967 Johari Harish met with David Pawda and Dr. Richard Albert,
who later became Baba ram Dass as mentioned in "Be Here Now." In 1969
Harish was invited to come to America and work on a film project but
the project was cancelled. At the age of 3 Johari Harish delivered a
speech and recited revolutionary
poems at an Arya Samaj meeting, where the Veda and Dharma were
discussed. He recieved his B.A. in 1953.
So this idea of effect and final cause with the arrow of time being
the PRESENT PRECEDES THE PAST seems to have first came from [1]
Johari Harish then [2] to David Pawda, who as already said above may
have been Roy Ald's Paul Lerning.
So in this case a 3 year old could have called Jack Sarfatti :-)

extension the world. Johari Harish knew Sarfatti's future because

Johari Harish is an adept a Master of Hyperspace from the Universe
Next Door. Johari Harish and by extension, the Master Seers Of
Hyperspace calls Jack through the medium of David Pawda when Pawda
was a child in 1953 :-) Pawda maybe Paul Lerning. Which witch is
which [witch.] Perhaps even bi-location?
Why the use of a physically hard concrete device in the form of a
telephone to communicate the activating triggering message to the 13
year old boy Jack Sarfatti instead of a mental astral esoteric
medium?
Its all in the "Many Sheeted" deck of cards that Andrei Sakharov
spoke of : This Universe allows it.
The beginnings of positivism with its rational roots in ancient
Egypt and Greece found it's laws at Pythagoras of Samos decending
down to the Western mind in the New World risen from the ashes of the
inquisitorial Dark ages like a Phoenix Bird ascending into the future

telephones and all things "plastic" to exist and is a very important

seemed too fantastic to include in my scientific papers, but in the

independently of this, the many sheeted model of the universe has, in
my view, important philosophical implications.

billions of years, might find a way to ENCODE its most valuable
information for its successors in the next cycle, separated by that
period of superhigh density.
An analogy would be the transmission by living organisms of genetic
information from generation to generation, compressed and encoded in
the chromosomes of the fertilized cell." This all
seemed too fantastic to include in my scientific papers, but in the
pages of this book I'm allowing my "IMAGINATION" free rein. And
independently of this, the many sheeted model of the universe has, in
my view, important philosophical implications.

Notes from 1993
I received a phone call from a man named George Koopman
during one of our Esalen seminars in 1976. He asked if he
could come to Big Sur. I said yes. Koopman soon became a
financial patron of my Ghost Busters at Esalen. Koopman
was a close friend of Dan Akroyd and my group was the
inspiration for the film Ghost Busters. He provided money
through military contracts with the Air Force and the U.S.
Army Tank Command funneled through his company Insgroup in
Irvine, California.
Koopman ... would talk freely when
high. He told us that he was related to Arthur Krock the
publisher of the New York Times. He said that he had blown
the whistle on U. S. Army Intelligence domestic spying to
the New York Times. Koopman said that he had worked on the
"kook desk" for the Defense Intelligence Agency and that
they were very interested in the kind of new physics we were
working on. They were especially interested in machines
that could tell the future and in new kinds of aircraft
propulsion systems. Koopman liked to show how he could open
locked doors with his burglar tools that he always carried
in his brief case. He showed me a letter from the military
giving him permission to have the tools.
Koopman was very interested in Werner Erhard's tax
structure. I took Koopman to meet Werner. Werner was in a
room with a large blackboard. On the board were several
references to "UFOs" and "extra-terrestrial contacts."
Werner did not seem to trust Koopman.
I found out through one of my girlfriends that Koopman
succeeded in spying on the Arica organization. Koopman,
Sirag and I had heard weird stories from Jan Brewer at
Esalen that Arica was started in Chile by high ranking
fugitives from the Third Reich who were masters of the
occult. Many of the regulars at Esalen, including some of
our group like Dr. John Lilly and Claudio Naranjo had
been in the first Arica training in Chile.
Timothy Learywas released from prison. Leary became part of
my group at Esalen. Leary was a close friend of Michael
Murphy. George Koopman arranged for Leary and me to lecture
together at the Arthur Young's Institute in Berkeley.
Koopman spent a lot of money hiring a professional T.V. crew
to record us. Robert Anton Wilson Nick Herbert and Saul
Paul Sirag participated in this event. Koopman became
Leary's business manager and publisher. Leary's message was
SMI2LE (Space Migration Intelligence Increase Life
Extension) which is also the message of this book.
Koopman sabotaged me at Esalen by suddenly breaking his
contract and stopping the cash flow he had committed. The
ostensible reason was that I had insulted the New Age
seminarians at Esalen by calling "idiots and morons" which I
did. Werner would say much worse in his trainings. Koopman
was very high on cocaine when he confronted me with this
supposed sin. Koopman would show up at the Cafe Trieste on
several occasions years later. I surmise that Koopman was
ordered by higher ups to cut me out of the Esalen picture
because I was too much of a "loose cannon" that they could
not control. They replaced me with my assistant Saul Paul
Sirag and with Nick Herbert who continued to run the Esalen
seminars. It may be that Koopman's death in 1989 was no
accident. That's just a hunch. Chipman's death around the
same time as Koopman's may also not have been from natural
causes.
I walked into the Caffe Trieste one day in 1979. A young
girl Maiti said she had written a poem about me. We soon
started dating. She said her father was a "senior policy
planner" in the government but she did not agree with his
politics and had briefly been in the Weatherman. She showed
me a photograph of her Grandfather who was a German General
(Rudel) during World War Two. Her father had met her mother
while on Army duty after the war. One day her father
telephoned and said that he heard that the Philadelphia
Incident was really true. Maiti mentioned that her
father had ET contacts as a child like I had. Her father
was an Arabic-speaking expert in Middle-East affairs with
high level contacts. He once sent me a manuscript on the
qabala and the mystical union between Judaism, Christianity
and Islam. One day Maiti showed me a copy of a letter that
her father, Robert Dickson Crane, wrote of his friend
Anthony Weiner at the Hudson Institute. The letter says
in part:
"Another individual, who may be just plain crazy but also
has a slight chance, in my view of being another Einstein,
is Jack Sarfatti, who is plugging his 'faster than light'
quantum physics ... The reason I am interested in Sarfatti's
ideas is that the full potential of negentropy in human
thought can be realized only if Sarfatti is right. ...
Assuming that Sarfatti is wrong ... the insights of Minsky
and of your own cerebration offer about all that the state
of the artificial intelligence art can handle for the next
decade anyway. If Sarfatti should ever prove to be right,
then our work on negentropy in human thought would have
created the tools for tapping whatever potential there is in
the 'new physics'."
I recently had breakfast with Maiti in the Haight-Ashbury
she said her father had recently converted to Islam and
wanted to be the first US Army Islamic Chaplain. She also
said that her father was a close friend of conservative Pat
Buchanan.
Crane's remarks are not that different from Martin
Gardner's published statement
"In recent years Sarfatti has been promoting an invention
.... designed to transmit coded information faster than
light. I know of no other physicist who thinks it will
work. If it does, Sarfatti will become one of the greatest
physicists of all time."
to be continued
Antony Valentini has since clarified what changes in
orthodox QM are needed to get "signal nonlocality".
IMHO Bierman's "presponse" data in mind-brain

SRI RV data also shows it if that data is accepted
as valid. The emergence of macro-quantum
coherence in a phase transition from a micro-quantum
substratum enables signal nonlocality. Our minds
are these macro-quantum information fields with
signal nonlocality IMHO.

Prior to physical interpretation with reference to a specific model, this decomposition
of the connection field is a *purely mathematical proposition*.
If it is so trivial and obvious, then perhaps you could explain how the basis of this
decomposition into tensor and non-tensor components is mathematically and physically
understood, in canonical theory, in terms of the abstract model of a 4-dim Riemannian
manifold?
I don't understand your question. For example, I have a thin little text book on GR I can show you where this split is mentioned very explicitly.
It is common knowledge.
The alternative neo-Newtonian model I am talking about is most definitely NOT
the classic Einsteinian paradigm, which held that the gravitational and inertial fields
are equally "fictitious" -- or equally "real" -- and are indeed one and the same
physical phenomenon that is exhaustively characterized at any given spacetime
point -- as a *fundamentally non-decomposable unit* -- by the unified metric tensor
field g_uv and its *first* derivatives.
Again I do not understand what your point is.
guv is related to the Newtonian gravity potential, for example in the SSS vacuum solution
goo = (1 - 2GM/c^2r)
V(Newton) = -GM/r
per unit test particle
The g-force is determined by the connection in the sense of the geodesic equation
i.e. I am using MAC MAIL MATH fonts I do not know if it will show in Windows properly?
dx^u/ds^2 + ?^u??dx^?/ds dx^?/ds = 0
For the LNIF observer on a timelike non-geodesic.
The g-force is simply ?^u??dx^?/ds dx^?/ds for the LNIF Bob.
It is zero for LIF Alice on a timelike geodesic intersecting Bob's worldline at P.
?^u? is a sum of a Diff(4) tensor and a non-tensor.
They add up to zero in the LIF, i.e. they "compensate" in the LIF.
The tensor part never vanishes in any frame
or else it vanishes in all frames! It's all or nothing for tensors.
This is all orthodox Einstein GR.
In fact this was *precisely* the heuristic that led Einstein to the concept of a unified
g_uv. This aspect of Einstein's theory was spelled out in black and white by Pauli in
his authoritative 1921 exposition:
"Gravitation in Einstein's theory is just as much of an *apparent force* as the
Coriolis and centrifugal forces are in Newtonian theory.
YES! The "g-force" is what they mean there NOT the tidal curvature tensor differential force!
I think you are simply confused on this point. The g-force is exactly like the Coriolis and
centrifugal forces in both GR and Newton that's RIGHT! The tidal force is a different story.
(We would be equally
justified in taking the view that neither of the two forces should be called an
apparent force in Einstein's theory).... The gravitational force can always be
transformed away in infinitely small regions, and this fact alone is decisive."
Theory of Relativity (First English Edition, Pergamon (1958)), p 148.
True but irrelevant. I think you are confused on the point above, i.e. the meaning of "Gravitation" above is for the non-tensor connection field not for the curvature tensor field.
Again,
"...this fact alone is decisive."
Connection g-force = Tensor + Non-Tensor
In an LIF Connection = 0
PZ: Of course I would prefer to spin this as "true and correct" and
"mathematically unassailable". :-)
JS: Physically accurate. Astronauts float.
It should be quite obvious that this is true in either model. This does not lift the
"degeneracy".
What does lift this "degeneracy" is the definition of vacuum stress-energy, and
the underlying question of whether the inertial part of the covariant g-field locally
self-gravitates.
Gravity self-gravitates and all you need for that, in non-exotic vacuum case of orthodox GR is
Ruv = 0
For example the Schwarzschild solution is a solution of Ruv = 0 when r is outside the event horizon at 2GM/c^2 and also outside r* where r* is the boundary of source M.
So obviously gravity gravitates or the only solution of Ruv = 0 would be globally flat space-time, which is not true.
If it does not, then IMO Einstein's basic model for GR is definitively refuted,
or at least demoted to purely heuristic status, since we must then extract the
non-gravitating component z_uv from the RHS of the field equations and replace
Einstein's pseudotensor u_uv with Yilmaz's fully covariant localizable vacuum
stress-energy term t_uv(vac).
No you are spinning your wheels on a simple confusion over the meaning of "gravity". You think of it as tidal curvature, but in the
quotes you cite they think of it as the connection g-force. This is a Tempest in a Teapot IMHO.
The beauty of all this is that the differences in the predictions of the two models
when embedded in the common geometrodynamic formalism are *empirically
testable*.

internal stargates can do and then the house and all to just disappear, not

spinning the dream of a receptive child into their space for a time!
From whence does this high adept emanate, from past or future...perhaps? But
within that veil between worlds the high adept acts within the 'eternal

Does the high adept work alone or with others of a shared mind of a deeper

But why to awaken the sleepers within a cave of a world stepped into upon a
spin inbetween?
Within the kingdom of the blind the one eyed are as kings and they need
bridges to 'cross' over into worlds yet to know of the underlying dream of a
web that connects all as one and upon spinning a child in one world they in
turn affect their own world and a myriad number of others!
A child growing into knowing of synchronicity, which be the subtle power of

Across the bridge of lightening the child masked as an adult to one day
confront a wise old wizard on the other side beckoning back upon a signal
with an outstretched hand and thereby to unmask to see his own face whose
eyes are those of a sorcerer.
His eyes are of obsidian mirrored wisdom knowing of the dream betwixt and
between the marked state white and the unmarked state black squares to leap
into becoming as the 'grey' to circle!
The eyes are as the windows to the soul unfathomable, unknowable and
formless that a child is closer to and thereby more willing to leap into
knowing of the old wizard at the other end of a string!
As an adult one often projects imprinted fears that are then reflected back
within the obsidian mirrored eyes but as a child still wondering and in awe
of a world that a child feels that is not the only one the old wizard can
send a signal back to upon a phone call within the dream externalised!
Too much knowledge of a future to come can blast an imprinted adult mind
quite fixated but a child is more open and receptive and moves within a
fluid mythic reality that becomes as a mirrored shield of wonders to come.
The 'Alpha' child walks the bridge of synchronicity towards the 'Omega' of
the old wizard who knows where the internal stargate can be found!
The old wizard in grey with eyes of mirrored obsidian...is not alone!

Try Alan Greenspan current head of The Fed. He was not in Walter Breen's group, but
was allegedly part of some Ayn Rand group that Walter was in contact with. Others
in the Breen group were Robert Solovay (UCB Berkelely Math Logic) for a short period,
Larry Sklar a Philosopher of Science, Johnny Glogower and Robert Bashlow.
Have you ever delved into Sheldon's archives here?
No. Not my provence. Someone should. The funding by Eugene Mc Dermott of course is key.
MC Dermott's links to Arthur Young, L Ron. Hubbard, Charles Lindburgh, Andrija Puharich
in early 50's need study. Heck, Tom Cruise today is a Scientologist! Remember the "storm"
in New Mexico at Roswell? Walter Breen's plane may have crashed in that storm. The
records of the 509th at that time would need to be checked. However "Walter Breen"
was allegedly not his original name in US Army records. I am in touch with Walter's
daughter whose mother was Marion Zimmer Bradley and also with CIA Chief of Station
Harold Chipman's son "Garrett" who is working on a movie about his father connected
with all this "PSI WARS" stuff from the 50's when "Chip" joined The Company and did
an English to Tibetan Dictionary leading up to his support of my physics in the mid-80's,
his hidden role in the SRI RV experiments not known by Hal Puthoff etc. Chip wrote
material for "The Enforcer" TV series based on his career. I also have one of his
film treatments called "The Union" - very interesting in relation to my book "Destiny Matrix."
Dennis Barden's role very interesting since he is/was a key biographer of Winston Churchill.
For Robert Sheaffer of Skeptical Inquirer to try to trivialize 1953 as some "prank" by another kid is completely false and
is very bad detective work. Whatever happened in 1953 it was NOT a childish prank and
I am sure has a lot to do with my distant cousin Margherita Sarfatti.

Again, it is likely that I was interviewed by Colonel Phil Corso in NYC at Quarter Masters Corp ~ 1951 perhaps
but I am not certain. Carlo Suares in Paris 1973 definitely part of the real "Priori de Sion" fictionalized
in "The Da Vinci Code". Note that "Sarfatti" means "The Frenchman" in Hebrew alluding to
Rashi de Troyes 1040 - 1105 and Carlo said to me in Paris in Xmas 1973
"You are Heir to The Tradition." The link to Reagan's SDI and Lawry Chickering's "Institute for Contemporary
Studies" hence to Rumsfeld and the Neo Cons today with the Stephen Schwartz-Michael Savage fiasco of early 2003
should not be forgotten, nor my role in catalyzing UFO films by Spielberg, my appearance in Star Trek IV DVD
this year etc. "Star Gate Conspiracy" by Picknett & Prince has one view what this all may mean.
I suspect that
they're probably still classified, given their Cold War provenance,
but an FOI request might possibly pry something loose. However, the
fact that these calls accurately predicted precisely what you would
come up with in 1973 argues against the "terrestrial" hypothesis, for
all the guidance and mentoring in the world couldn't lead you
necessarily to those particular conclusions.
My entire time in high school was spent as part of Walter Breen's group
under Sheldon's aegis. Walter got me into Cornell, MIT and University
of Chicago. He really wanted me to go to the University of Chicago. It
would be interesting if he knew Leo Strauss? What I think were USG
agents from "New Mexico" monitored the project and one lectured me on
anti-communism. This would be from 1953 to 1956. I was also in the
Civil Air Patrol in 1954-5. Flying saucers, paranormal powers with us
as meeting or matching "alien mutants" was part of Walter's curriculum.
Walter himself told me of his airplane crash in New Mexico in 1947 in
an Army Air Force mission. He lost his memory completely he said. But
he was much more intelligent after the "accident" and a year or so in
Army Hospital he said. The word "abduction" did not exist at that time.
Remember Walter was a founder of MENSA and he knew PK Dick years later
in Berkeley and was married to Marion Zimmer Bradley (Mists of Avalon).
Anyway, it's certainly a fascinating business, isn't it?
.... (yes on that :-))

waiting. A house entered into down a lonely street where an individual
cloaked by knowing offers to show what the white Rabbit leaping through
internal stargates can do and then the house and all to just disappear, not
there anymore...in this universe that is. A house remembered...or was it a
bright white light of a doorway or perhaps that of a flying disk? A
telephone call to a spun child...in another universe next door is heard and
by connection to a web binding all, those close, can too be spun into
hearing a voice on the other end of the string, who on the edge of forever
is...laughing at the subtlety of it all!
A sound of laughter deep of one awakened within the dream, which is the veil
between worlds and upon knowing of a 'name' can dial a 'number' into
spinning the dream of a receptive child into their space for a time!
From whence does this high adept emanate, from past or future...perhaps? But
within that veil between worlds the high adept acts within the 'eternal
present' in the round 'squaring the circle' of others upon spinning their
dreams by a word alone!
Does the high adept work alone or with others of a shared mind of a deeper
knowing? Alone...no! They weave the informational reality of the dream into
spinning themselves from out of worlds unseen into a world of sleepers yet
to awaken to their inherent legacy.
A child growing into knowing of synchronicity, which be the subtle power of
magick of an ancient technology lost to find again and each synchronicity a
dream born stargate to leap through into another alternate world beckoning.
Yours Sincerely

Thanks to Brian Josephson for making me aware of Susskind's paper
"The Anthropic Landscape of String Theory" cited in Brian's

Lenny and I were students together at Cornell in 1963 when
I brought Johnny Glogower to Cornell with Phil Morrison's
help. I suggested the problem of the quantum phase and time
operator to Lenny. I had been working on it at Tech/Ops
under George Parrent, Jr. on Route 2 in Burlington, Mass
in a building shared with Mitre. Lenny, Johnny and I
all worked on it together for weeks at Newman Nuclear Lab
and then I was called to Ford Philco Aeronutronics in
Newport Beach CA the Summer of 63' where I met Fred Cummings.
I stayed longer than anticipated. That's when I met
Feynman at Cal Tech and he told me about superfluid
helium and the /\ transition as we drove around
Sunset Strip in my 1959 XK 150 Jaguar convertible
top down looking at the local exotic birds. Peter Carruthers
told Lenny to publish the paper during my absence.
A few years later I was with Lenny and David Finkelstein
visiting at Yeshiva University and Lenny told me and
David that up to then the main paper he was known for
was that phase operator paper which also appeared in same
issue of the short-lived paper with JS Bell's famous
locality inequality violating micro-quantum theory.
I had seen that same conflict independently in
1961 at Brandeis when I read a Rev Mod Physics
paper by David Inglis on the tau-theta puzzle.
I went very excited to Sylvan Schweber and

OK Lenny says De Sitter space is unstable. That confirms what I suspected.
One way to write the De Sitter metric is from Lenny's paper eq. (2.4)
ds^2 = R^2[dt^2 - (cosht)^2d^2(Unit 3 sphere metric)]
where R = (/\G)^-1/2
/\ = Einstein's global cosmological constant.
Now in my LOCAL theory
R^2 = (-/\zpfLp^2)^-1= [1 - Lp^3/2|Vacuum Coherence|^2 ]^-1
The relation to the dilation transformation of the Conformal Group is obvious
starting from R = 1 that corresponds to ZERO VACUUM COHERENCE.
R is no longer a constant, but must be a local field.
We can write /\zpf = Lp*^-2
Therefore
(/\zpfLp^2)^-1 = (Lp*/Lp)^2 ~ e^Dilaton ?

I went very excited to Sylvan Schweber and
Stanley Deser saying "Hey, special relativity
and Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen effect contradict
each other! I had not yet read the EPR paper only
Inglis's paper. Schweber and Deser told me

As far as the call goes, only Jack was there and the rest of us have

course, but the probability is extremely low, given the
circumstances. Who would have known enough to say such a thing. There
was not even much science fiction in 1953 that even mentioned
something like this, much less that it would be an idea for a prank
thought up by a 12 year old.
Jack has never once varied the story or changed it. So, to say he was
trying to fool us is hardly possible, as I see it.
The "story" is in
http://stardrive.org/cartoon/spectra.html
Exactly, I would have to be a complete idiot to tell that story if it were not true.
It's uncanny no matter how one interprets it because of the fallout 20 years
later including Ch 11 of Remote Viewers by Jim Schnabel re: "metallic voice"
and Uri Geller with Hal Puthoff and Russell Targ who I met in 1973 +
my role in L' Affaire Geller in Martin Gardner's "Magic and Paraphysics".
meeting Brian Josephson, influencing Coppola's, Spielberg et-al on UFOs
then Reagan on SDI etc. etc. as told in "Destiny Matrix."
Now with the discovery of "dark energy" in 1999, Brian Josephson's
latest paper, Brian Greene using my phone call to ET in NOVA's
"Elegant Universe" + all their talk on time travel to brane worlds
next door - all the stuff Sirag and I have been talking about since
Robert Anton Wilson's "Cosmic Trigger" and Gardner's article is
now "mainstream" prime time with Brian Greene, not to mention
my appearance in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home DVD Special
Collector's Edition on how to Make Star Trek Real given
Gene Roddenberry's association with the same chaps I met in
1973 as the" ET AI" said I would in 1953. However, you
look at the facts it's very very spooky and no wonder the
powers that be are scared about what this all may really mean
in the light of
http://qedcorp.com/APS/EmergentGravity.pdf
and Ch. 9 of Sir Martin Rees's "Our Final Hour."
It's very spooky and most people are too clueless to
see what is happening here.
If it was "staged" in 1953 it had to be from
either US Army or a Secret Fascist Society
into UFOs like "The Silver Shirts" who
were I think active at that time?
Why me? Simple:
Margherita Sarfatti
"Il Duce's Other Woman"
"The Cradle Will Rock"
How to connect the dots given
Erik Davis's "Techgnosis"
my experience with Priori de Sion
in 1973 (Carlo Suares) is now
much easier. It's even in
"The Da Vinci Code"
and Umberto Ecco's
"Foucault's Pendulum"
"Star Gate Conspiracy"
"Holy Blood, Holy Grail"
and similar books of that genre.
It's possible I met Colonel Corso
in NYC at Quarter Masters Corps.
There was one high-ranking
Army Officer who did spend a
lot of time with me talking about
rockets, travel to other planets.
Also Corso would have definitely
known all about Margherita Sarfatti
given his WWII Rome assignment
and his Italian Heritage. Margherta
was called "Dictator of the Figurative Arts"
and "The Uncrowned Queen of Italy"
at the peak of Mussolini's power in 1920's.
I suspect my Aunt, Victoria Sarfatti, a
historian, met her in the 1930's.
G. Marconi was in love with
Margherita till his dying day and
there are stories of his interest in
the "flying saucers."
It's possible there are old US Army Records that
could shed light on my above speculations.
Also Dennis Bardens, connected with
British Intelligence, a biographer of
Winston Churchill, knew about all this!
I wonder if he is still alive or left written
notes?

Re the assumption that our laser weapons could have “held the aliens

“blarney.” But Corso may have honestly have believed it to be true.
Re Robert Sheaffer’s snide comments about Jack’s famous 1953 “alien”
phone calls, I think we should trust Jack’s judgment here. As he
says, he was there and Shaeffer was not. Whether this “cold metallic”
voice actually came from our own future, or from a closely related,
but still marginally different timeline, universe, or whatever, is
another matter. But unless Jack is lying through his teeth—and again,
I have no reason whatsoever to believe that he is—he did indeed
receive a communication from an exotic, and most likely alien source,
one that was, as he points out in his book, vindicated twenty years
later as the discoveries the voice predicted came to pass. It’s a
curious episode, but certainly not one without precedent in the
paranormal literature.
I have told the story consistently since 1973 at least and there is a
tape from 1973 with me and Puthoff et-al where I tell the story as I
knew it then before I met Andrija Puharich and Geller as Saul-Paul
Sirag explains the interesting twist. Why would I make up such a
seemingly nutty story that would obviously damage my career as a
respectable physicist? It did happen as I say. It was not a prank in
the sense Sheaffer meant it. If it was simulated it was done by
adults with a serious purpose on a 13 year old boy. The curious
prediction of what was to happen 20 years in the future as recorded
by none other than Martin Gardner in "Magic and Paraphysics" is quite
uncanny. Also the voice was "cold metallic" in sense of Ch 11 of
"Remote Viewers" by Jim Schnabel - again involving Hal Puthoff.

Hal Puthoff
Russell Targ
Brendan O Regan
Edgar Mitchell

Jacques Vallee
Ira Einhorn
Arthur Young

Don:
Without going into any detail, Phil Corso read the entire manuscript
in Florida, made his pen and ink corrections to it, and OK'd it
before it went to the publisher. Then, when the manuscript came back
in galleys, Phil Corso read it again and communicated directly with
the editor that all was OK. There was not a moment that Corso was out
of the loop on the manuscript or not able to pick a phone to call the
editor directly.

'Berlitz wrote that, you have to blame it on him'. I replied: you

As for the Iraqi WMD, yes, I believed it too, but I'm not sure
it's
100%
wrong. First, we know that Saddam had WMD in the 90s, but he did
*not*
provide proper documentation of its destruction. Second, some
Israeli
sources claim that that at least some of the Iraqi WMD were
transferred to
Syria (we know that during the first Gulf War, he sent part of
his Air
Force
to his "enemy" Iran). Third, Saddam's plan appears to have been to
reduce
his WMD program to a 'small nucleus' of germs and nuclear
capabilities
(like
the scientist who had a centrifuge buried in his back yard) until
such
time
as the U.N. sanctions would hopefully be lifted, and then he
could go
into
big-scale production. It does appear to be true that Saddam did
not
have
much in the way of weapons-ready WMD in 2003 (although the U.N.
and
many
others believed that he did).
About your much-ballyhooed '1953 phone call', I seem to recall
reading that
somebody like 'an older brother or cousin' of one of your friends
much
later
confessed to having done this as a prank."
What do you mean you seem to recall? I lived it you did not.
I do not have an older brother.
I did not have any cousins at that time. No one
in my family then was scientifically literate or
into UFOs.
Again I say for the record what you say above is
100% false. I am very curious where you got those
lies from? Indeed, the 1973 tape of me with Puthoff & Targ
is evidence for the contrary as Sirag can explain.
I did not meet Walter Breen until after that phone call by
several months nor had I yet met Robert Bashlow or
Johnny Glogower or Robert Solovay. They
are the only intellects of my class who in 1953
could have even conceived of such a "prank."
The only people who could have done it were
1. The US Army Intelligence who studied me as a child
at Quarter Master's HQ in downtown Manhattan near
the John Wannamaker Bdg where Captain Video was
shot. I attended some of the shoots. My Grandfather
worked for the Army and I used to play in the
Army facility and ride in Army cars with high
ranking officers talking about space travel and
rockets. I was perhaps 10 or 11 years old. This
happened over many months. The precise dates
can be found from Army records showing when
my Grandfather Murray Jacobson worked for them.
II. An occult fascist Secret Society into UFOs
like the "Silver Shirts" described by Jacques
Vallee because of my relation to Benito Mussolini's
mentor and mistress Margherita Sarfatti
beloved of G. Marconi. See "Il Duce's Other Woman."
Note that Roberto Sarfatti was the symbol of
Fascist Youth in Italy from 1918 to the 1920's.
See also "The Cradle Will Rock" by Tim Robbins where
Susan Sarandon plays Margherita Sarfatti.
I looked in my youth amazingly like one of
Margherita's sons Amadeo.
Also I used to have a recurrent dream of being
killed in a trench in WWI BEFORE I knew
of the Roberto Sarfatti story! Roberto
was killed at age 18 taking a bullet to save
Mussolini very close to the end of the
War on the Austrian front. Remember that
Italy was on the Allied side in WWI.
That is why Roberto was glorified later.
Again I did not know this story until
after the strange meeting with David
Padwa. It's all in my autobiography
"Destiny Matrix" that you obviously
have not read or you would not have
made your completely false statement.
"Now, since I do not now have the
source for this information in front of me, I concede that this
statement,
currently unsupported, has no probative value. Perhaps I can find
it
again.
Are you aware of such a claim, and if so, how do you judge it?"
It is a slanderous lie because it makes me look like a liar or an
idiot
or
both. It's a very cheap shot. How could anyone even pretend to that
kind of information? They would have to have been there! That's
50 years ago. I am very interested in who is propagating that lie
because that person or persons is my or are my enemies and it is
very important to know who one's enemies are.
'I remember an incident from my own childhood, around 1956. I was
only
6 or
7. I answered the phone, it was a man who said something like
"You're
such a
smart boy, Robert, bla bla bla, you've won a box of Kellogg's Corn
Flakes."
I told my mother excitedly, "Mommy, I won something!". She picked
up
the
phone, and after a moment said, "It's your uncle Wally, he's just
joking".
Is there any possibiltiy that your famous phone call was
something like
that????"
NONE WHATSOEVER! Besides my mother remembered "three weeks of calls"
lasting
"many hours" where I was walking around "glassy eyed". She finally
grabbed the phone
from me and HEARD the "cold metallic voice".
It's as shown in
http://stardrive.org/cartoon/spectra.html
There is not one shred of truth in the lie you related or in your
silly
theory of what it was.
I am no fool when it comes to this stuff.
best,
Roberto, il tenore

My opinion of Corso's book is based on a few key things he says
that "ring true" to my intuition. This is far from rigorous
proof of
any kind of course.
1. Crew artificial AI fits my 1953 "experience" in
http://stardrive.org/cartoon/spectra.html
That really happened. Now what was really on the other end of the
telephone I do not know.
2. Control of craft via brain waves.
3. Inside of ship is virtually "empty" no massive engines,
no kitchens, no toilets, i.e., nano-tech & star gate virtual
instant transportation perhaps to brane world next door
across a small distance in hyperspace?
4. Time travel - they come from the future again
that fits what happened to me in 1953 when
the alleged ET AI said what would happen
in 1973 when in fact I met Hal Puthoff et-al
as part of the CIA funded SRI RV project
as Saul-Paul tells it in my book "Destiny Matrix".
We even have a 90 minute tape of part of my
meeting with Hal Puthoff, Russell Targ,
Brendan O Regan, et-al arranged by
Jacques Vallee who did not show up -
curious. My 1953 contact is discussed
on that tape. Jim Hurtak also mentioned.
All very odd no matter how you cut it.
How I got there is bizzare. It's all in
"Destiny Matrix."
5. My current physics consistent with Corso's
Big Picture including recent trickle of new communications
with Hal Puthoff.

only second hand knowledge. Is it possible he was fooled? Yes, of
course, but the probability is extremely low, given the
circumstances. Who would have known enough to say such a thing. There
was not even much science fiction in 1953 that even mentioned
something like this, much less that it would be an idea for a prank
thought up by a 12 year old.
Jack has never once varied the story or changed it. So, to say he was
trying to fool us is hardly possible, as I see it.
The "story" is in
http://stardrive.org/cartoon/spectra.html
Exactly, I would have to be a complete idiot to tell that story if it were not true.
It's uncanny no matter how one interprets it because of the fallout 20 years
later including Ch 11 of Remote Viewers by Jim Schnabel re: "metallic voice"
and Uri Geller with Hal Puthoff and Russell Targ who I met in 1973 +
my role in L' Affaire Geller in Martin Gardner's "Magic and Paraphysics".
meeting Brian Josephson, influencing Coppola's, Spielberg et-al on UFOs
then Reagan on SDI etc. etc. as told in "Destiny Matrix."
Now with the discovery of "dark energy" in 1999, Brian Josephson's
latest paper, Brian Greene using my phone call to ET in NOVA's
"Elegant Universe" + all their talk on time travel to brane worlds
next door - all the stuff Sirag and I have been talking about since
Robert Anton Wilson's "Cosmic Trigger" and Gardner's article is
now "mainstream" prime time with Brian Greene, not to mention
my appearance in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home DVD Special
Collector's Edition on how to Make Star Trek Real given
Gene Roddenberry's association with the same chaps I met in
1973 as the" ET AI" said I would in 1953. However, you
look at the facts it's very very spooky and no wonder the
powers that be are scared about what this all may really mean
in the light of
http://qedcorp.com/APS/EmergentGravity.pdf
and Ch. 9 of Sir Martin Rees's "Our Final Hour."
It's very spooky and most people are too clueless to
see what is happening here.
If it was "staged" in 1953 it had to be from
either US Army or a Secret Fascist Society
into UFOs like "The Silver Shirts" who
were I think active at that time?
Why me? Simple:
Margherita Sarfatti
"Il Duce's Other Woman"
"The Cradle Will Rock"
How to connect the dots given
Erik Davis's "Techgnosis"
my experience with Priori de Sion
in 1973 (Carlo Suares) is now
much easier. It's even in
"The Da Vinci Code"
and Umberto Ecco's
"Foucault's Pendulum"
"Star Gate Conspiracy"
"Holy Blood, Holy Grail"
and similar books of that genre.
It's possible I met Colonel Corso
in NYC at Quarter Masters Corps.
There was one high-ranking
Army Officer who did spend a
lot of time with me talking about
rockets, travel to other planets.
Also Corso would have definitely
known all about Margherita Sarfatti
given his WWII Rome assignment
and his Italian Heritage. Margherta
was called "Dictator of the Figurative Arts"
and "The Uncrowned Queen of Italy"
at the peak of Mussolini's power in 1920's.
I suspect my Aunt, Victoria Sarfatti, a
historian, met her in the 1930's.
G. Marconi was in love with
Margherita till his dying day and
there are stories of his interest in
the "flying saucers."
It's possible there are old US Army Records that
could shed light on my above speculations.
Also Dennis Bardens, connected with
British Intelligence, a biographer of
Winston Churchill, knew about all this!
I wonder if he is still alive or left written
notes?

curious episode, but certainly not one without precedent in the

The only people who could have done it were
1. The US Army Intelligence who studied me as a child
at Quarter Master's HQ in downtown Manhattan near
the John Wannamaker Bdg where Captain Video was
shot. I attended some of the shoots. My Grandfather
worked for the Army and I used to play in the
Army facility and ride in Army cars with high

happened over many months. The precise dates
can be found from Army records showing when
my Grandfather Murray Jacobson worked for them.

was killed at age 18 taking a bullet to save
Mussolini very close to the end of the

That is why Roberto was glorified later.

String Theory, Universal Mind, and the Paranormal *

ABSTRACT
A model consistent with string theory is proposed for so-called paranormal phenomena such as extra-sensory perception (ESP). Our mathematical skills are assumed to derive from a special ‘mental vacuum state’, whose origin is explained on the basis of anthropic and biological arguments, taking into the need for the informational processes associated with such a state to be of a life-supporting character. ESP is then explained in terms of shared ‘thought bubbles’ generated by the participants out of the mental vacuum state. The paper concludes with a critique of arguments sometimes made claiming to ‘rule out’ the possible existence of paranormal phenomena.
Keywords: ESP, string theory, anthropic principle, thought bubble, universal mind, mental state
* To appear in the Proceedings of the 2nd. European Samueli Symposium, Freiburg, October 2003
1. Introduction
Critics of claims of the paranormal, e.g. Deutsch (2001), have declared extrasensory perception (ESP) or other paranormal phenomena to be ‘nonsense’ . Such absolutist positions give little weight to the experimental evidence (Radin 1997) in support of the reality of such processes, and seem naive given the range of imaginative proposals concerning the nature of reality currently being put forward for serious consideration by conventional physicists. One important advance has been the superseding of the so-called Standard Model as a fundamental theory of nature by string theory (http://superstringtheory.com), where the Standard Model features merely as a subset of the set of permitted possibilities. As Carr (2001, 2003) (whose approach is centred on the alternative Randall-Sundrum picture) has suggested, such a change in perspective opens up new possibilities in science, including the possibility of accommodating paranormal phenomena within physics. In the following a number of concepts are combined, each in essence consistent with accepted ideas, resulting in a qualitative explanation for ESP, with the promise of an eventual clear cut basis for understanding paranormal phenomena in general.
2. A separate mental reality
A key assumption we make is one which, while it has no clear connections with experimental physics, does make contact with a position that was advocated by mathematicians such as Gödel (Davis and Hersh 1981, Penrose 1994). This is the idea that some aspects of mentality involve a realm of reality largely, but not completely, disconnected from the phenomena manifested in conventional physics. The idea of a disconnected realm does have precedents, for example in the way two of the fundamental forces (the strong and weak forces) play no role in large areas of physics and chemistry, whilst in other contexts they have a very important part to play. Next note that string theory, involving as it does spaces having more dimensions than the usual three, and also a non-unique vacuum state (and according to Susskind (2003a, b), a very large number of such states), is consistent with there being such a ‘separate realm’, in a way that the Standard Model, with its unique vacuum state contained within a limited number of spatial dimensions, did not.
The point in regard to mathematical thinking, which motivates our model, is the following. Consider first of all what the brain does in visual perception. Here the primary information from the visual receptors goes through various levels of processing until it ends up as a high-level representation of the content of the visual field. It is not unreasonable to identify mathematics as a similar process, except that higher levels of abstraction are involved in this case. With the visual case, the mechanics are straightforward: the visual field typically contains for example edges, for which abstraction a dedicated neural system has evolved, related to our ability to perceive edges. It is hard to see why we should have such ready access to higher mathematical abstractions having little connection with experience (Penrose 1994). One resolution of the problem would be for mathematical concepts to be in some way ‘in the physics’, rather than being emergent properties of brains. In case it is felt that such a drastic solution is not necessary to explain our ready access to mathematical ideas, and that neural networks can provide an adequate explanation, a stronger argument for the existence of some kind of Platonic realm can be made on the basis of the aesthetic aspect of music (Josephson and Carpenter 1996).
So far, in shifting the locus of mathematical thinking (and music?) to another realm, we have only replaced one mystery by another. But why should such a realm exist at all? The explanation we provide is of a biological character, taking account of the fact that information processing is an essential component of biological functioning, but with only very specific informational processes having a life-supportive character. While it is commonly taken that the informational processes involved are mediated by ordinary physical means, it is not a logical necessity that this should be the case. Some informational processes in an organism are specialised to the nature and circumstances of the organism concerned, but some have a more abstract and universal character, and so could be mediated by a quite different system with which individual organisms would interact.
Next we observe that a form of proto-life, defined as fluctuation patterns surviving longer than typical patterns do, can be hypothesised as occurring at the Planck scale, evolution of such life being expected to involve evolution of the accompanying informational systems also. We get to the proposed model by supposing that the ordinary physical component and the informational component can evolve separately. and that the informational component can even survive the creation and destruction of individual universes, remaining as an ever-present background with which new universes, Planck scale fluctuations and more developed life forms can all beneficially interact. Assuming an indefinitely extended time scale, the most persistent part of the informational background can evolve indefinitely, so that its dynamics might come to include features corresponding to mathematical concepts and operations as well.
This idea can be fruitfully connected with anthropic ideas, particularly taking the point of view of Susskind (2003a, b), who explains the way our universe seems to be mysteriously fine tuned to develop in such a way that life is possible in terms of it being only one of a vast number of coexisting universes, a small proportion of which have such a property, one of which we find ourselves occupying. Our speculations can be seen as the application of a similar idea to the informational aspect of life.
While Susskind treats life as a passive occupant of whatever universe can permit it to develop, our proposals see life in a more general light, able to shape its environment in a partnership with it, in a manner analogous to the proposals of Lovelock (1995) (the Gaia hypothesis, for which there is now considerable supportive evidence), to the effect that life may be able to interact cooperatively with its environment, discovering how to operate upon it to its best advantage.
3. A model for ESP
We need to add another piece of detail to our model. In order that it can model individual thought, we suppose that individual life forms can perturb the background state so as to create a localised ‘thought bubble’, tied to the individual concerned. This suggests that the vacuum state involved is close to a phase transition, so that an appropriate perturbation can create a domain with a different kind of order to that of the vacuum.
Assuming the validity of the scenario that has been described, the picture proposed can be adapted to account for the phenomena we set out to explain, namely telepathy or ESP. In the first, the grounds for the existence of such a process can be taken to be the advantages that might be conferred in certain situations if two life forms could in some way share their mental states (there could also be accompanying disadvantages, the significance of which will become clear later). It is natural to postulate, in this case, that a shared ‘mental bubble’, whose contents are available to both life-forms, is involved. We assume, as would need to be assumed generally in the model, that the state of this bubble plays the role of information that is meaningful in the context and, by virtue of this, usable by the connected systems.
The physics involved in the ‘sharing’ that has to be assumed in the above can be clarified by means of an analogy based on the Mössbauer effect, which is a phenomenon involving the decay of radioactive nuclei embedded in a crystal (Mössbauer 1961). In a certain fraction of cases, depending on parameters such as the decay energy and the temperature, the recoil from such a decaying nucleus is in effect transmitted to the crystal as a whole rather than generating activity in the vicinity of the decay. These ‘no local recoil’ processes involve a certain subset of all possible final states of the system, for which, as quantum mechanics allows, the state of the lattice vibrational system (phonons) is unchanged by the decay. This somewhat esoteric possibility suggests a mechanism, dependent on analogous constraints upon the possible states of the thought bubble, that could fit our requirement of a system state being shared by two individuals as in the ESP situation.
4. Countering the critics
The problem any such analysis has to face is that of explaining how it is that, if such a mechanism for ESP or other paranormal processes exists, these processes manifest themselves only in very specific ways, and in ways that are not readily controllable. This should not be seen as an insuperable objection, since other phenomena (e.g. those involving the weather), have similar features. The point to bear in mind is that in the biological realm the phenomena that manifest are governed not only by what is physically possible, but also by which of those physically permitted possibilities are likely to be of overall benefit to the organism concerned. In the ESP context, an undifferentiated sensitivity to the thoughts of all other people, as would result from the uncontrolled sharing of thought bubbles, would tend to be disadvantageous rather than of benefit, leading to the individual being overwhelmed by thoughts of others. Most of these would be merely distracting, and interfere with constructive activity. The right way to think about ESP is therefore to see it as a slowly developing phenomenon for a given individual, and one which may not develop at all if conditions are unfavourable. We see from this analysis that the frequently made counter-argument to the existence of ESP, that if it were possible it would have such a survival value that we would all evolve to be very good at it, is based on a misleading concept of what would be involved.
A related problem is the one raised by Weinberg (1993), who asks what possible physical signal could move distant objects and yet have no effect on scientific instruments? Such a question ignores the possibility that there might be a threshold for psychokinetic effects. A similar argument would lead one to be equally sceptical of claims that the heat of the sun can induce chemical reactions (i.e. burning) in a piece of paper, analogously something that happens only under special circumstances (e.g. using a magnifying glass to focus the sun’s rays on to a spot on the paper), the amount of burning under normal conditions being negligible.
The moral to draw would seem to be that one should not be too ready to dismiss paranormal phenomena on the basis of apparently plausible arguments; as ’t Hooft (2001) has said in a slightly different context, plausible arguments come with their own ‘small print’, viz. assertions to the effect that assumptions that seem reasonable to their authors may be violated in the real world.
5. Concluding comments
This work was motivated primarily by the perception that the arguments commonly made against the possible existence of paranormal phenomena are not well-founded, suggesting a need to discover how they might be accommodated within conventional science. Proposals with this aim have been made previously, based upon Bohm’s causal interpretation of quantum mechanics (Josephson and Pallikari-Viras 1991, Valentini 1991), but the fact that the causal interpretation of quantum mechanics has not developed in ways relevant to current scientific concerns suggests it may be more fruitful to look elsewhere for ideas. The present paper is the outcome of such an investigation. Clearly, it is at best a sketch of a theory, since the arguments are of a very qualitative character, but this qualitative sketch brings to light a number of specific issues whose resolution may provide the basis for a more complete account of the phenomena.
6. Supplementary remarks (added after submission of paper for Proceedings)
Susskind's arguments suggest that reality may be much more complex than has normally been assumed. Further changes in fundamental science (which may include consideration of the influence of life) may be required to address this complexity. Since our proposals (such as thought bubbles emerging from some kind of background) do not involve the precise details of string theory, they may survive any such changes that fundamental science may undergo.

I have heard from a confidential reliable source at NSC level during Reagan Era that Ed Teller used that scenario as one reason, of several, to go ahead with SDI so that Corso should not be faulted on that one. It was an alleged Mission Objective not that we had such weapons in place ready to go.
