It is argued that the `problem of time' in quantum gravity necessitates a
refinement of the local inertial structure of the world, demanding a
replacement of the usual Minkowski line element by a 4+2n dimensional
pseudo-Euclidean line element, with the extra 2n being the number of
internal phase space dimensions of the observed system. In the refined
structure, the inverse of the Planck time takes over the role of
observer-independent conversion factor usually played by the speed of light,
which now emerges as an invariant but derivative quantity. In the
relativistic theory based on the refined structure, energies and momenta
turn out to be invariantly bounded from above, and lengths and durations
similarly bounded from below, by their respective Planck scale values. Along
the external timelike world-lines, the theory naturally captures the `flow
of time' as a genuinely structural attribute of the world. The theory also
predicts expected deviations--suppressed quadratically by the Planck
energy--from the dispersion relations for free fields in the vacuum. The
deviations from the special relativistic Doppler shifts predicted by the
theory are also suppressed quadratically by the Planck energy. Nonetheless,
in order to estimate the precision required to distinguish the theory from
special relativity, an experiment with a binary pulsar emitting TeV range
gamma-rays is considered in the context of the predicted deviations from the
second-order shifts.

This is a personal request related to your "Fusion.. ." article in sci.physics .. This may not be exotic as zero point energy, but I hope you would consider giving the concept a serious once over.

I have invented a fusion concept first introduced to Furth and Rosenbluth, et al. and have been experimenting on physical production of the magnetoplasmoid in atmospheric gas. The magnetic topology is Spheromak and its physical embodiment is PLASMAK or Plasma Mantle and Kernel (PMK).

Briefly the PMK is comprised of a toroidal plasma, all hyperconducting (energetic) currents and its self-generated insulating field that formed within a spherical plasma shell. The formed PMK has an energy lifetime from several tens of milliseconds to multiseconds.

When formed the hyperconducting magnetoplasmoid sits within a bounding atmospheric pressure gas. Consequently, a D-He3 fueled PMK can be adiabatically compression heated to ignition by raising the surrounding fluid pressure from one atmosphere to 20 kilobars. Since the PMK compresses self similarly, it remains stable and is rugged, as well as avoids current driven or resistive instabilities. The compression will be driven by mechanical means. The fusion burn (milliseconds) heats the blanket to ionization, which then is released through an inductive MHD generator to directly generate electric power. Operation at 60 Hertz is possible, and the Carnot efficiency using p-B 11 is 90-95%. Six units crushing plasmoids the size of a plum will generate 3-phase 10 gigawatt electric output using protium boron 11. The by product is He4.

We have patents that describe the apparatus and methods, and principle applications include:
Electric power plants from 50 megawatts to 20 gigawatt
Hyperkinetic EMP bullets that burst on target impact
Hyperpropulsion thrust with aneutronic fusion power generator

Never has so much tax money been spent on a physics theory (M -Theory in "Elegant Universe" on NOVA), aside from "hot fusion", with so little contact with experimental fact. Nevertheless, M Theory may be on the right track to my program of "Making Star Trek" real. Note how Brian Greene talks to ET on the telephone like in 1953 in my book "Destiny Matrix" (2002) and how the idea of time travel to parallel brane worlds is taken seriously - as the UFO facts suggest it should be. Brian has made my ideas on the potential consequences of the New Physics much more mainstream.

physical reality* of the g-field, I and others can only suspect that this points to a
fundamental conceptual problem in the Einsteinian model.

PZ: This has nothing specifically to do with asymptotically flat spacetime, so is it
really me who is confused here? Of course the situation is *similar* in some
respects when we want to compute these approximately invariant integrals in
the approximately "flat" spacetime region far from any source -- but the question
of non-locality of u_uv and the *approximate* invariance of *any* such integrals
formed from it over finite spatial volumes is quite general in scope.

JS: Oh no? What about Ch 20 of MTW? My understanding of your "invariance" is that it is a kind of asymptotic Poincare
group not a local Diff(4) group.

The reason for the need for these pseudo-tensors is, I suspect, the collision between metric and topology. They are not independent although I suppose local metric geometry is the slave of global topology.

JS: Pretty much. We are talking about different problems. I am not interested right now in gravity waves which is what all your stuff is really about. The Pu and Muv Fourier transforms are the power spectra of the gravity waves from the source geometry. It's all "far field" radiation in the asymptotically flat regions. I mean that's what those Flux Integrals are all about. The "Flux" is gravity waves through the bounding surfaces.

PZ: Strictly speaking, there are no proper analogs in Einstein GR to the energy and
momentum integrals of Newtonian theory. There is no question about this.

JS: Fine, but that is not my problem. My problem is LOCAL metric engineering where leakage into gravity waves and EM waves is an annoyance especially for stealth "cloaking" of spacecraft.

PZ: Obviously Einstein thought that this was important in 1918, since he struggled to
find such analogs. Schrodinger also regarded the issue as fundamentally significant
for Newtonian correspondence.

JS: I am not denying the importance of the problem for foundational studies. I am only trying to distinguish that your problem is not the one that interests me, which is metric engineering.

PZ: If one can find a simple way to fix this problem in a manner that is fully consistent
with the fundamental theorems of geometrodynamics, that makes intuitive
physical sense, and that is consistent with all available empirical data, then I would
have thought that such an opportunity would be welcomed with open arms.

Re Robert Sheaffer’s snide comments about Jack’s famous 1953 “alien” phone calls, I think we should trust Jack’s judgment here. As he says, he was there and Shaeffer was not. Whether this “cold metallic” voice actually came from our own future, or from a closely related, but still marginally different timeline, universe, or whatever, is another matter. But unless Jack is lying through his teeth—and again, I have no reason whatsoever to believe that he is—he did indeed receive a communication from an exotic, and most likely alien source, one that was, as he points out in his book, vindicated twenty years later as the discoveries the voice predicted came to pass. It’s a curious episode, but certainly not one without precedent in the paranormal literature.

I have told the story consistently since 1973 at least and there is a tape from 1973 with me and Puthoff et-al where I tell the story as I knew it then before I met Andrija Puharich and Geller as Saul-Paul Sirag explains the interesting twist. Why would I make up such a seemingly nutty story that would obviously damage my career as a respectable physicist? It did happen as I say. It was not a prank in the sense Sheaffer meant it. If it was simulated it was done by adults with a serious purpose on a 13 year old boy. The curious prediction of what was to happen 20 years in the future as recorded by none other than Martin Gardner in "Magic and Paraphysics" is quite uncanny. Also the voice was "cold metallic" in sense of Ch 11 of "Remote Viewers" by Jim Schnabel - again involving Hal Puthoff.

I have already explained this: z_uv is the "stress-energy" contribution of the
inertial field, which is a non-world-tensor that can always be made to vanish by
a suitable choice of general spacetime coordinates.

But the real Tuv(Geometry) is local and is always zero in non-exotic vacuum.
It is not obvious that the inhomogeous part of the connection has contributions
to the tidal curvature that can be made to vanish. I doubt that. Also the inertial
part of the connection does not vanish in the LIF it cancels the tensor part.
Your argument seems inconsistent in purely formal terms.

Cancel this "fictitious" or "virtual" frame-dependent stress-energy component out of
the RHS of the Einstein field equations and you get Yilmaz's field equations -- which
can be based squarely on a tensor gravitational potential and an exponential definition
of the gravitational metric.

This makes no sense to me at all formally or informally.

So I believe I have found the missing link: I start with a fundamental internal
critique of the "EEP" and its canonical interpretations, which strongly suggests an
alternative non-Einsteinian physical interpretation of canonical formal-empirical "EEP"
in terms of *inertial compensation*, as tentatively suggested by Yilmaz as early as 1992.

When this interpretive program is pushed through consistently, we end up with a
fundamental frame-independent linear decomposition of the standard connection field
into inertial and "permanent" components -- which leads straight to the Yilmaz vacuum
stress-energy tensor t_uv (vac) and the Yilmaz field equations

1/2 G_uv = tau_uv (matter) + t_uv (vac)

which appear to be fully consistent with both the Bianchi and Freud geometrodynamic

This would explain why according to a pretty clear mathematical argument the standard GR
field equations don't have interactive solutions with a precise "static" Newtonian limit, and
indeed strictly speaking may not even have any gravitationally interactive n-body solutions
*at all*.

If this is right, then standard GR may even be formally inconsistent, as well as semantically
incoherent. And these two defects may be closely related.

I suspect it all goes back to the (understandable) error of taking the largely heuristic Einstein
equivalence conjecture far too seriously, and all the related early confusions regarding formal
covariance vis a vis physical relativity of motion, etc. etc.

It is not obvious that the inhomogeous part of the connection has contributions
to the tidal curvature that can be made to vanish. I doubt that. Also the inertial

Huh? It comes from point particle idea. String theory solves that OK, but it does not solve the cosmological constant problem as Ed Witten admitted in a very admirable display of intellectual honesty and integrity that I applaud.

EM waves are LOCAL MACRO-QUANTUM COHERENT STATES of real photons in the far field and of
virtual photons in the near field. I mean in the sense of Glauber's 1960's "quantum optics" now
extended to "squeezed states".

The micro-quantum matter wave of a single electron is a pilot wave of nonclassical "active information" so are many-electron entangled matter waves in configuration space or, alternatively, the pre-wavelet Wigner phase space density with information on incompatible observables consistent with Heisenberg's uncertainty principle of a discrete "lattice" phase space of area h per pair of conjugate observables. Blackhole thermodynamics that S/k ~ Area of Event Horizon/Lp^2 is an example leading to the idea of the World Hologram that our 3 + 1 classical spacetime is really a holographic projection of a 2 + 1 quantum field theory. It needs to be a MACRO-QUANTUM projection. More on that later.
